In what can only be described as a thrilling display of both skill and determination, the Chicago Cubs pulled off a stunning comeback win against the New York Yankees last night. The Cubs, who were down by five runs going into the bottom of the ninth inning, rallied back with a barrage of hits and some clutch base running to eventually edge out the Yankees by a score of 7-6.
“I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon. “Our guys just never gave up, never lost faith in themselves. It was a total team effort.”
The game-changing hit came off the bat of Cubs outfielder Ben Zobrist, who launched a three-run home run off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.
“It was one of those moments where time seems to slow down,” Zobrist said. “I just tried to stay relaxed and put a good swing on the ball.”
The Cubs completed the comeback when second baseman Jason Kipnis hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning, bringing home the winning run and sending the Wrigley Field crowd into a frenzy.
“It was electric out there,” Kipnis said. “Moments like this are what we play for.”
The win was especially sweet for Cubs ace Jon Lester, who had a rough outing earlier in the game but was able to watch his teammates pick him up in the end.
“I’m just so proud of these guys,” Lester said. “They never cease to amaze me with their resilience and their heart.”
The Cubs now sit atop the National League Central standings, their confidence riding high after such an incredible victory. As for the Yankees, they will have to regroup quickly as they continue their road trip with a series against the rival Boston Red Sox. This game will no doubt go down as one of the most memorable in recent memory, a true showcase of the magic that is baseball.
